Maha Navami is the grand culmination of the nine-night Navratri festival, dedicated to Goddess Durga in her fierce and victorious manifestation as Mahishasuramardini, the slayer of the buffalo demon Mahishasura. It is celebrated with intense spiritual fervor across India on the ninth day (Navami) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwina.

In eastern India, Maha Navami is the apex of Durga Puja celebrations, where the Sandhi Puja concludes and the Maha Arati takes place amidst reverberating dhak drums and fragrant incense. In southern and western states, this tithi is observed as Ayudha Puja or Saraswati Puja, where vehicles, machinery, craft tools, books, and musical instruments are purified, decorated, and revered in thanksgiving for honest livelihood.

Devotees conclude their Navratri fasting through Kanya Pujan, inviting nine young pre-pubescent girls as living embodiments of the Navadurga to wash their feet, offer vermilion, and serve them feast prasada of halwa, puri, and spiced chickpeas.
