A moneylender's wife in a town had seven sons. Before Diwali she went to the forest to dig clay to plaster her house.
02
While digging, her spade accidentally struck and killed a cub of the syahu (usually said to be a porcupine; a few tellings say a lion). In anger the mother syahu cursed her, and her seven sons died one by one.
03
Grieving, she told the elders what she had done. They advised her to worship Ahoi Mata on Ashtami, drawing the syahu's picture and asking forgiveness.
04
She kept the fast with a sincere heart. In the story the goddess was pleased and her sons returned. Mothers have kept this fast for their children's well-being ever since.
