Dev Uthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi kathaदेवउठनी (प्रबोधिनी) एकादशी कथा

कार्तिक शुक्ल एकादशी को प्रबोधिनी, यानी हरिबोधिनी एकादशी कहते हैं। इस दिन भगवान विष्णु जागते हैं। पद्म पुराण में ब्रह्मा ने इसकी महिमा नारद को सुनाई।

Kartika Shukla Ekadashi is called Prabodhini, or Haribodhini, Ekadashi. On this day Vishnu is said to wake. In the Padma Purana, Brahma tells Narada its greatness.

कहा गया है कि प्रबोधिनी का एक उपवास हज़ारों अश्वमेध यज्ञों के फल के बराबर है। उस रात का जागरण पापों को वैसे जला देता है जैसे रूई का ढेर जलता है। इस व्रत से पितर प्रसन्न होते हैं और घोर पाप करने वाला भी विष्णु के धाम पहुँचता है।

The text says a single fast on Prabodhini equals the fruit of thousands of horse sacrifices, and keeping vigil that night burns sins as a heap of cotton burns. The ancestors of those who keep it are delighted, and even a person of grave sin reaches Vishnu's abode.

इस दिन फूल, फल, कपूर, अगरु और केसर से विष्णु की पूजा करें। रात्रि जागरण में शंख के जल में फल डालकर अर्घ्य दें। विष्णु की कथाएँ सुनें, भजन गाएँ, फिर गुरु को भोजन और वस्त्र देकर प्रसन्न करें।

Worship Vishnu that day with flowers, fruit, camphor, agaru and saffron. During the night vigil, offer arghya with fruit in water from a conch. Listen to Vishnu's stories, sing, then honour the guru with a meal and clothes.

कार्तिक भर विष्णु को तुलसी के पत्ते अर्पित करने की बात भी इसी अध्याय में है। कहा गया है कि इससे अनेक जन्मों के पाप जल जाते हैं। देवउठनी के बाद तुलसी विवाह की रीति भी परम्परा से इसी से जुड़ी है। अध्याय में विवाह का वर्णन नहीं है।

The same chapter also speaks of offering Tulasi leaves to Vishnu through Kartika, which is said to burn the sins of many births. The rite of Tulsi Vivah after Dev Uthani is linked to it by tradition. The chapter does not describe the marriage.
