दीपावली की कथाएँ कई हैं। एक कथा के अनुसार समुद्र-मंथन में देवताओं और असुरों ने जब क्षीरसागर को मथा, तो कमल पर बैठी लक्ष्मी प्रकट हुईं और उन्होंने भगवान विष्णु को वरमाला पहनाई।
Diwali has more than one story. In one, when the gods and demons churned the ocean of milk, Lakshmi rose seated on a lotus and garlanded Lord Vishnu.

दूसरी कथा रामायण की है। चौदह वर्ष का वनवास पूरा करके और रावण का वध करके श्रीराम सीता और लक्ष्मण के साथ अयोध्या लौटे।
Another is from the Ramayana. After fourteen years in exile and the defeat of Ravana, Rama returned to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshmana.

अमावस्या की उस रात अयोध्यावासियों ने पूरे नगर में दीपक जलाए, ताकि अपने राजा का स्वागत प्रकाश से हो।
On that new-moon night the people of Ayodhya lit lamps across the whole city, to welcome their king with light.

इसीलिए दीपावली की रात घरों में दीप जलते हैं, लक्ष्मी और गणेश की पूजा होती है, और घर को स्वच्छ रखा जाता है। परिवार अपनी-अपनी परम्परा के अनुसार कथा कहते हैं।
That is why lamps are lit on Diwali night, Lakshmi and Ganesh are worshipped, and the house is kept clean. Families tell the story in their own tradition.
