Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha and Vidyunmali were the three sons of Taraka. They performed severe austerities. When Brahma appeared, they asked for immortality. Brahma said immortality is not possible and told them to ask for another boon.
02
So they asked for three cities, one of gold, one of silver and one of iron. The condition was that the cities would join into one only at a rare moment once in a thousand years, and only then could they be destroyed by a single arrow. The asura architect Maya built the three cities, and the asuras lived and ruled there happily.
03
Then Shiva mounted a chariot in which all the gods were present in some form. With the arrow set on his bow he stood for a hundred thousand years, but the cities did not come within his aim. A voice from the sky said he would not succeed unless Ganesha was worshipped. Shiva worshipped Ganesha, and the three cities joined into one.
04
The gods shouted in triumph. Shiva released the arrow, shining like countless suns, and the three cities were burnt to ashes. Those who took refuge in Shiva in their distress, and those who had not opposed the gods, were saved by his radiance. This is why Shiva is called Tripurari. Tradition links this to Kartik Purnima. These chapters do not give the date.
