Long ago a moneylender with seven sons had one daughter, Veeravati. After her marriage she came home for her first Karva Chauth and kept the full fast, no food and no water, from morning.
02
By evening hunger and thirst had worn her out. Her brothers could not bear it. They set a lamp behind a tree, held a sieve before it, and told her the moon had risen: "Sister, give the offering and eat."
03
She took the light for the moon and broke her fast. The first morsel made her sneeze, the second had a hair in it, and before the third reached her mouth, word came from her husband's house that he was dead.
04
She ran, weeping. In some tellings Shiv and Parvati meet her on the way and tell her that breaking the fast before the real moon caused this, and that she must keep the fast again, properly, next year.
05
She tended her husband's body for a year, kept the fast faithfully the next Karva Chauth, and broke it only when the true moon was up. In the story, her husband woke.
