01

Narakasura, king of Pragjyotishpur, was very powerful. He had stolen Aditi's earrings and Varuna's umbrella and held over sixteen thousand women captive.

02

Indra went to Dvaraka and complained to Krishna. Krishna reached Pragjyotishpur with Satyabhama, riding Garuda. Narakasura was the son of Bhudevi, the Earth.

03

In the Bhagavata Purana, Krishna kills Narakasura with his discus. A popular telling, especially in the south, says Krishna fainted in the battle and Satyabhama shot the arrow that killed him, because he had a boon that only his mother could kill him.

04

Krishna freed all the captives and people lit lamps in joy. In memory of this, there is a custom of bathing before dawn and lighting lamps on Chaturdashi.
