विन्ध्य पर्वत पर क्रोधन नाम का एक निर्दयी बहेलिया रहता था। उसने जीवन भर हिंसा, लूट और बुरे काम किए।
On the Vindhya mountains lived a cruel hunter named Krodhana. All his life he had been violent, robbed people and done wrong.

बुढ़ापे में उसे मृत्यु और यमदूतों का भय सताने लगा। वह घबराकर अंगिरा ऋषि के आश्रम में पहुँचा और अपने पापों से मुक्ति का उपाय पूछा।
In old age he began to fear death and the messengers of Yama. In panic he went to the ashram of the sage Angira and asked how he could be freed from his sins.

ऋषि ने कहा कि आश्विन शुक्ल एकादशी का व्रत रखो और भगवान पद्मनाभ की पूजा करो। यह पापों को वैसे ही वश में करती है जैसे अंकुश हाथी को।
The sage told him to keep the fast of Ashwin Shukla Ekadashi and worship Lord Padmanabha. It holds sins in check the way a goad (ankusha) controls an elephant.

क्रोधन ने श्रद्धा से व्रत किया। कथा कहती है कि उसके पाप धुल गए और उसे यम का भय नहीं रहा। इसी कारण इसका नाम पापांकुशा एकादशी पड़ा।
Krodhana kept the fast with faith. In the story his sins were washed away and he no longer feared Yama. This is why it is called Papankusha Ekadashi.
