01

King Muchukunda was a devotee of Vishnu and had ordered everyone in his kingdom to keep the Ekadashi fast. His daughter Chandrabhaga was married to Shobhan, son of King Chandrasena.

02

Once, at Rama Ekadashi, Shobhan came to his in-laws' house. He was frail and found hunger hard to bear, but the kingdom's rule applied to everyone. He kept the fast and died the next morning.

03

By the merit of that fast he was given a beautiful city to rule on Mount Mandara. But the kingdom was unstable, because Shobhan had not kept the fast wholeheartedly.

04

A Brahmin named Somasharma, on a pilgrimage, reached the place and recognised Shobhan. Shobhan told him the city was unstable because he had kept the fast without faith, and asked him to tell Chandrabhaga. Somasharma returned and took her to the sage Vamadeva's hermitage near Mount Mandara, where Vamadeva's hymns made her body divine. She told her husband she had kept the Ekadashi fast since the age of eight. By that merit the city became stable, and she lived there happily with him.
