Sharad Purnima katha: the two sistersशरद पूर्णिमा कथा: दो बहनें

एक गाँव में एक साहूकार की दो बेटियाँ थीं। दोनों पूर्णिमा का व्रत रखती थीं। बड़ी बहन श्रद्धा से व्रत रखती और चन्द्रमा को अर्घ्य देकर ही व्रत खोलती थी। छोटी बहन व्रत को बस नाम के लिए रखती और बीच में ही खोल देती थी।

In a village a moneylender had two daughters. Both kept the Purnima fast. The elder kept it with faith and broke it only after offering arghya to the Moon. The younger kept it only in name and broke it midway.

विवाह के बाद बड़ी बहन के स्वस्थ सन्तानें हुईं, पर छोटी बहन की हर सन्तान जन्म लेते ही मर जाती थी। दुखी होकर वह एक सन्त के पास गई। उन्होंने कहा कि अधूरे मन से व्रत रखने के कारण यह दुख मिला है, श्रद्धा से करो तो चन्द्रमा की कृपा होगी।

After marriage the elder sister had healthy children, but every child of the younger died at birth. In sorrow she went to a saint. He said that keeping the fast half-heartedly had brought this, and that if she kept it with faith, the Moon would bless her.

छोटी बहन ने अगली शरद पूर्णिमा पर पूरे नियम से व्रत रखा। फिर पुत्र हुआ, पर वह भी मर गया। तब उसने उसे पीढ़े पर लिटाकर कपड़े से ढक दिया और बड़ी बहन को बुलाकर उसी पीढ़े पर बैठने को कहा।

The younger sister kept the next Sharad Purnima fast with full rules. A son was born, but he too died. She laid him on a small bed, covered him with a cloth, called her elder sister, and asked her to sit on that bed.

बड़ी बहन के बैठते ही उसके वस्त्र का स्पर्श बच्चे को हुआ और वह रोने लगा। बड़ी बहन ने चौंककर छोटी को डाँटा। छोटी ने कहा कि वह तो पहले से मरा हुआ था, तुम्हारे पुण्य और चन्द्रमा की कृपा से जी उठा। कहते हैं तभी से शरद पूर्णिमा का व्रत प्रचलित हुआ।

As the elder sister sat, her clothes touched the child, and he began to cry. The elder sister was startled and scolded the younger. The younger said he had already died, and had come to life by her merit and the Moon's grace. It is said the Sharad Purnima fast became popular from then on.
