01

Jalandhara, son of the Ocean, was married to Vrinda, a devoted wife. While Jalandhara was fighting Shiva, Vishnu took on his form and came to Vrinda. She had bad dreams and wandered in the forest, afraid.

02

In the forest she met an ascetic and asked about her husband. At his sign, two monkeys brought Jalandhara's severed head and trunk. Vrinda fainted. The ascetic restored Jalandhara to life, and she lived with him.

03

Later Vrinda recognised that it was Vishnu. In anger she cursed him: his two doorkeepers would become demons and carry off his wife, and he would wander the forest grieving for her. Then Vrinda entered the fire. Vishnu covered himself with the ash of her pyre and stayed there, and found no peace.

04

The Padma Purana says three plants grew from seeds scattered there: Dhatri (amla), Malati and Tulasi. Seeing them, Vishnu forgot his grief and was glad. This is why Vishnu is worshipped beside Tulasi. After Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Tulasi is married to Shaligrama. That rite is tradition; these chapters do not describe it.
