01

In the Satya Yuga there lived a powerful demon named Mura. He defeated Indra and the other gods and drove them out of heaven. The gods took refuge with Lord Vishnu.

02

Vishnu fought Mura for a long time. Then, to rest, he lay down in a cave at Badarikashrama. Mura followed him there and tried to kill him as he slept.

03

At that moment a radiant young woman came forth from Vishnu's body, armed with divine weapons. She fought Mura, and Mura was reduced to ashes.

04

When Vishnu woke, he was amazed to see Mura dead and asked who had done it. Ekadashi told him. Pleased, Vishnu offered her a boon. She asked that those who fast on her day receive well-being, righteousness, wealth and liberation, and Vishnu granted it. Tradition places this on Margashirsha Krishna Ekadashi and calls it Utpanna, 'born', Ekadashi.
