01

King Priyavrata was a son of Svayambhuva Manu. For a long time he had no child. On Kashyapa's advice he performed a putreshti sacrifice. Queen Malini ate the sacrificial rice pudding and carried the child for twelve years. A golden, beautiful son was born, but he was dead.

02

The king carried the dead child to the cremation ground and wept. Then he saw a shining aerial car in the sky, with a radiant goddess seated in it. The king praised her and asked who she was.

03

The goddess said she was Devasena, Brahma's mind-born daughter and Skanda's wife, born from the sixth part of Prakriti, and so called Shashthi. She told him that happiness, sorrow and children all come from one's own deeds. Then, by her yogic power, she brought the boy back to life.

04

She asked the king to worship her himself and have everyone worship her. Then she gave the son back and said he would be famous as Suvrata. The glad king began to keep the sixth day of the bright fortnight as the goddess's day. Shashthi is also worshipped on the sixth and twenty-first day after a child's birth. The festival of Chhath, on Kartika Shukla Shashthi, is traditionally linked to this goddess. The offering of arghya to the Sun is not in this chapter.
